FAQs for Group Retreats at Ruk

Yoga retreat stuff

  • Yes, we have 8 guest bedrooms and set aside an additional room for the retreat organiser. We have a rate that gives you exclusive use of the property.

  • Our yoga shala (if you are planning a yoga retreat) can comfortably fit 16 people. 18 is definitely possible but above that is a slight squeeze.

The same goes for our bedrooms. We have 8 with different room setups (doubles, twins, triples etc.). Our Group Retreats guide gives clear description of the rooms.

  • We have a good stock of yoga mats, blocks and bolsters. If you want us to provide equipment please ask at time of booking and we can update on exact details of the equipment we have at the time.

  • In total our Shala is 12.5 metres x 7.5 metres.

The full internal space (i.e. inside the columns) is 11.7 metres x 6.7 metres.

  • There’s no bad time!

Rukgala is on the fringes of Sri Lanka’s ‘dry zone’ and so gets drier weather than a lot of the island.

While weather patterns feel a bit less predictable these days the clearest, driest months have tended to be January-March. It gets hotter through April and can be a little rainy in May and June with traces of the South West Monsoon. (Actually this year it has been really dry through May and June too.)

July-September are good months to be at Ruk. Through October-December we sometimes get rains with the North-East Monsoon.

The lake goes up and down according to the rains we’ve had. The best time of year for paddle-boarding and wild swimming tends to be December through to March when the lake is highest after the North East rains.

(We have pricing that reflects different demand through the year, so if you’re looking to host a lower priced group retreat, we might have a great price for you if you’re flexible on dates.)

Hotel-type stuff

  • If guests are flying in specifically for the retreat we are about a 3.5 hour drive from the airport.

We can help in arranging transport - either private vehicles of vans to collect groups at the same time.

Taking the train from Colombo to Kandy is quite a unique and interesting way for foreign visitors to reach Rukgala. From Kandy we are a 45 minute drive.

  • Our Hikes and More pages give an idea of the activities and trips available from Ruk.

In addition, Kandy - Sri Lanka’s Cultural Capital - is less than an hour away - and your guests might enjoy a day trip there to visit the Botanical Gardens and the famed Temple of the Tooth.

  • Yes they can. It’s easy for your guests to see availability and book rooms online with us, using any of the Book Now buttons on the site. We’d suggest they book on Bed and Breakfast basis. Pricing for that is shown here.

  • Likewise you’re very welcome to if we have rooms available. We won’t be able to offer the teacher room outside of your retreat dates but can offer a 15% discount to you and/or other teaching assistants/retreat organisers when booking the B&B rate in a standard guest room.

  • We have a set 6-day menu that is mostly vegan. We can, on request, add some flexitarian options for some of the nights.

The menu offers a mix of Sri Lankan and western dishes at breakfast (typically a late-ish breakfast/brunch after practice); a western-style light lunch; a Sri Lankan-inspired evening meal.

Money stuff

  • We have a fixed price for the accommodation; that price dependent on a minimum of 3-nights use.

Food and drink is offered on a per person basis. We will send you the exact rates on request.

There is no food charge for (up to) two teachers/organisers on the retreat.

  • Once we have sent you an invoice we request a payment of USD 1,000 within 10 days to continue to hold the space.

That payment is 50% refundable up to 30 days after payment - if you find that you’re not getting the interest you hoped for. (What’s more, we’ll keep the other 50% for you as credit to use on a future retreat or personal stay.)

We then ask for 25% of the accommodation cost 60 days before arrival and the balance 30 days before arrival. These payments are non-refundable.

Costs for food and drink (calculated per person) are payable on arrival.

  • Our pricing for the accommodation does change a bit through the year.

Prices start from USD 520 to hire the property exclusively in the ‘quietest’ months.

Please ask us for the full rates sheet.
