Before we even thought of Rukgala, we were hosting Ashtanga groups at a very beautiful tea estate just north of Kandy. With the option of developing Rukgala we thought it would perfectly suit those group retreats and so yoga was really the cornerstone of the whole project. It wasn’t just a nice add-on and it’s still probably the key element in what we offer.

Yoga at Rukgala

Having said all that, we are not an austere yoga ‘centre’. We get yogis of all levels and while most tend to be some way along in their practice, plenty come to Ruk entirely new to it.

That in mind, our teachers develop classes that work for all levels. You’ll feel super comfortable whatever level you’re at.

Morning classes

Our morning classes start at 8am - after a little (coffee and fruit) pick-me-up up at the Top House. Our in-house teachers lead a fresh and energising Vinyasa class of about an hour - normally just tipping over past 9am.

Evening classes

We’ve toyed with different start times for our evening class but find, with some folks wanting to fit other stuff into the day it works best to run from 6.15.

A gentle Yin class wraps the day as the sun goes down. Our lovely Shala is a pretty special, energy-rich and warm place to be as day slows down.

Private classes

When things get really busy at Ruk we sometimes have two in-house teachers but most of the time we’re at one and so, though very happy to give private classes, those need a little advance notice.

Prices for private classes depend on the teacher(s) with us during your stay but just ask and we’ll let you know.

Visiting Rukgala for yoga

We’d obviously encourage you to stay with us at Ruk but if not possible and you want to visit for a group (or private) yoga class you’re welcome to do so.

Please check availability and confirm a slot in advance by sending a WhatsApp message to +94 76 341 1020.

Prices

If you’re staying on one of our Personal Retreats then all group yoga classes are included within your stay price.

For other stays, Group Yoga is USD 15 per person per class

Private classes vary per teacher. Please ask us at Ruk what the options are.

We went kind of all in with the Shala - wanting to make it a really warm, energising space for beautiful classes

Teachers at Ruk

Rose Manoharan joined us as our resident teacher in March 2023. She has been practising yoga for six years and is a YTT 200 qualified instructor.

Originally from Kandy, close to Rukgala, she studied in Dubai but is now happily returned to Sri Lanka. She is one of very few local female instructors and is working to encourage others to explore routes into yoga teaching.

Alongside Rose we have visiting yoga teachers from time-to-time to support and offer variations in teaching styles and practices.

If you’re interested to join us to teach at Ruk, please be in touch.
